IFSTL releases schedule of courses for 2012

A schedule of eight ccourses has been announced for 2012. Topics include the detection of mycotoxins, pesticide residues, drug residues in aquaculture products and microbial contaminants (Cronobacter in infant formula, Salmonella in produce and E. coli in produce and meats).

Dates confirmed for APEC Pesticide Residue Training: May 14-18th, 2012

A course entitled "Pesticide Resiude Analysis is Fresh Fruits and Produce" will be offered at IFSTL from May 14th to the 18th, 2012. This course is supported by a grant from the USDA Emerging Markets Program (see news below), which will financially assist participants from eligible Asia-Pacific countries. Countries eligible for funding are: Chile, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Philippines, Russia, Thailand and Vietnam. Participants from governments, industry and private testing laboratories from these countries are all elligible to apply. Please register early to obtain financial assistance.

IFSTL Visits the National Academies for Food and Drug Control in Beijing, China

Dr. Janie Dubois, Manager of the IFSTL traveled to China in February to meet with Director Li Yunlong, Deputy Directors Jian Zou and Zhilu Wang, and their team to discuss potential collaboration in the area of laboratory training.

IFSTL awarded USDA Emerging Markets Program Funding

The International Food Safety Training Laboratory received funding to deliver laboratory capacity building activities to APEC economies. As a result of this grant, a special course on Methods of Pesticide Residue Analysis will be offered at IFSTL in May 2012, where select participants from APEC economies meeting criteria defined in the EMP program will receive financial assistance to participate in the training. An online introductory course will also be developed as part of this initiative.

Fera/JIFSAN 13th Symposium Announced

The thirteenth in a series of annual symposia in food science is jointly organised by The Food and Environment Research Agency (Fera), UK, and the Joint Institute for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (JIFSAN), University of Maryland, USA. Each year the symposium focuses on a different topic associated with state-of-the-art food science and technology. The topic of the 2012 event is “New developments in food science: realising the potential of ‘omics’ technologies”.

Chinese Pharmacopoeia Commission visits IFSTL

The International Food Safety Training Laboratory was honored by the presence of 25 representatives of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia Commission on December 8th, 2011. Mr. Ed Zhao, Director of International Business Development at the U.S. Pharmacopeia led the delegation to IFSTL for discussions on training for regional Food and Drug Control laboratories in China and other institutions involved in testing imported foods and foods intended for exports.

JIFSAN and Chile Discuss Training Programs

Mr. Anibal Ariztia R, National Director of the Agricultural and Livestock Service of Chile, Mr. Joaquin Tagle E., Agricultural Attaché and Ms Andrea Visconti, Trade Specialist at the Chilean Embassy, visited JIFSAN for fruitful discussions on the deployment of GAP, GAqP and laboratory training in Chile and at IFSTL.

Pesticide Residue Analysis Course Starts for Chinese and Indonesian Students

The Grand Opening week at IFSTL kicked off on Monday with a dynamic group of students eager to learn about methods of pesticide residue analysis. The group will spend one week learning about the regulation, compliance issues and laboratory techniques. Welcome to IFSTL!
